What is ESSI?

The European Strategic Safety Initiative (ESSI) is :
  • a 10 year programme (2006-2016)
  • aimed at promoting the highest common standards of safety in civil aviation and improving aviation safety in Europe, and for the European citizen worldwide
  • Partnership powered by industry and facilitated by EASA
  • more than 150 organisations involved
Which organisation are participating to ESSI?

Participants are drawn from the EASA Member States, the ECAC countries, manufacturers, operators and professional unions, research organisations, the FAA and international organisations such as EUROCONTROL and ICAO.
In total, more than one hundred fifty civil and military organisations are participating to date in the ESSI.

What is the overall structure of ESSI?

What is EHEST?

The European Helicopter Safety Team (EHEST) is the helicopter branch of the ESSI, and also the European component of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST). EHEST is committed to the goal of reducing the helicopter accident rate by 80 percent by 2016 worldwide, with emphasis on improving European safety.

What is EGAST?

The European General Aviation Safety Team (EGAST) is the General Aviation (GA) branch of ESSI. The aim is to promote and initiate for all sectors of GA best practices and awareness in order to improve safety.
EGAST is a voluntary partnership between EASA, other European regulators including National Aviation Authorities (NAA) and the GA community aiming at improving GA safety.

What is ECAST?

The European Commercial Aviation Safety Team (ECAST) is a branch of the ESSI.

What is the ECAST SMS WG?

The ECAST SMS WG is a working group of ECAST. The European Commercial Aviation Safety Team (ECAST) identified the Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Safety Culture  as a key subject.
A specific working group has been created.

Are there any other Safety initiatives worldwide?
There is numerous safety initiative s in the world
  • COSCAP: Cooperative Development of Operational Safety and Continuing Airworthiness team under the ICAO Technical Co-Operation Programme.
  • BAG: Banjul Accord Group
  • ASET: the African Safety Enhancement Team, is an IATA Team
  • CAST: US Commercial Aviation Safety Team: www.cast-safety.org
  • PAAST: Pan American Aviation Safety Team

The Middle East Aviation Safety Summit took place in Abu Dhabi on 21-22 Jan 08. At the summit it was decided to establish a Middle East Safety Team, in line with recommendations of the Global Aviation Safety Roadmap. According to the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, the issues to be addressed include the chronic shortage of aviation professionals and the rapid growth of aviation in the region.

How is funded ESSI?

The European Strategic Safety Initiative (ESSI) is a partnership based on voluntary involvement of organisations. The initiative is facilitated by EASA.
